i'm just wondering if guys in the west are like those described in novels and general frictions available in bookstores. if so, why is it that asian guys are not like them?

be it western or Asian fiction, the fictious characters won't stand reality.
Yes, the Asian guys are not like their western counterparts, because they represent different culture, society, economy, educational systems. In fact western and Asian lifestyles/values/culture has a sea difference between them. Yes, an Asian and a western groomed together will not be much different from each other. Otherwise they are bound to be different.

If you are talking about guys from Western States (like Texas)... they do tend to be polite, well mannered, respectful... like most of the Asians I've known.
If you mean country... well, I think that "rural" is "rural" pretty much anywhere and farmers/ranchers are just a different sort of people.
If you're talking about other things, they're about equal. Both cultures are repressed in many ways and each has different but pretty equal ways of expressing "courtship behavior".

I would have to say it is the culture and the life style. That is why the asian guys are different.
