The more you try to remember something, more anxiety it causes and that does not allow you to remember. You are focusing on trying to remember, not on the thoughts. Slow down. Breathe deep. If it's meant to come back to you it will. Maybe not in the time frame you want it to or the way you expect it to (dreams are good for that), but it will. You might also want to try keeping a notebook handy to jot down thoughts that may occur in the future.

Sounds like anxiety. Try exercising, biking, squash, yoga, meditation, activities that bring your mind and body into harmony. Also, cut down on caffeine and sugars. Sorry, that sounds new age, but it's the type of stuff that often works. If you continue to have racing thoughts, you might consider talking it over with your doctor. She/he may be able to help rule out medical causes and help you figure out what's going on. The best start is to not overly stress on the other day. Good luck.

Here's my way of solving this kind of problem. Just stop thinking for a while. Look around instead, smell the flowers. Feel the rays of the sun playing on your face; enjoy a light breeze. Soak up the rain. Enjoy what you see - life is wonderful. See its beauty. Take a moment and breath in life. My motto is "Relax and enjoy it, you'll be dead soon enough." I mean it's life itself that matters, we come to this world to enjoy it. And thoughts, they distract us from the true beauty of life. We keep thinking about the way we don't live now, while life is going past leaving us behind. Don't do it to yourself again! Don't decay yourself with too much thinking! Don't do it, please! Live.

If you don't remember them and have completely forgotten it all, how do you know they were major important stuff?
Keep a big stack of paper and a bunch of sharpened pencils handy so you can write down every thought you have.
