It sounds like he is being nice and hitting on you. If you tell people about the break up it is to be expected,right? Part of being single again.Doing something around town may be fun.

i would only start meeting him in these public places with a friend, and in crowds if your intuition says it may be okay.at least he isn't offering to take you home behind closed doors, or wanting to know where you live etc. but also be wary of going anywhere in a vehicle or if his body size scares you. I'm sure some other person on here will have something better to say in favor of your safety----be safe

He may be doing one of two things. A: Trying to help you forget about the pain of the breakup. or B: trying to get to you using your breakup as your vulnerable point.
If he's a good friend I'd say that he's probably just trying to help, but the further you get towards "casual" in the friendship, the more likely he's just trying to get in your pants.
