My daughter is almost three now and still in a crib, mainly because she has never attempted to climb out. Her room is located on the second floor and we are worried that putting her into her toddler bed will possibly create a more dangerous situation if she decides to take a stroll in the wee hours. Any suggestions would be very helpful. By the way, we have looked at placeing a gate at the top of the steps but the way it is layed out, there is no way to attach a safety gate properly.

Don't even think about putting up a gate at the top of the stairs, ever. They are so dangerous. The child can lean against it and fall down the stairs with a heavy object instead of on her own.

At 3, she should be old enough to be climbing and maneuvering stairs on her own with no problems. Remember, children frequently have better night vision than adults. Put in a nightlight so she can see where she is walking and leave your door open a small crack so she could come and get you if she needed something. If your room is on a different floor, look into rearranging the rooms for a short time. Maybe the office could go upstairs into her room and she could come downstairs to be closer to you.
The chances of her falling down the stairs are slim. The longer you try to protect her from all the dangers of the world, the longer it will be before she truly develops some natural behavior.

Ever since my son switched to his toddler bed I have put a gate in his doorway. He is now almost 4 1/2 yrs & I still put the gate up @ night. I also still use a moniter so I can hear if there's a problem (since he can't come get me) or if he's decided 2 play in the middle of the night.

We actually got a baby gate for the top of the stairs. I dont know if this one would work for you but I attached the link. This works great! I have a three year old that hasnt had a problem at all. Not getting up and walking around in the middle of the night. But I figured that might work.

I did the same thing with my two year old about three months ago. What we did that worked was for the first two or three nights, we slept on the floor in her room. If she woke up, we were there to make sure she was safe. After a few nights, we slept in the room across the hall. If she woke up and came to look for us, we met her before she could go downstairs. Now, we sleep in our own room. We put a safety light at the bottom of the steps. She can easily see the steps, and comes down stairs by herself to our room.

In your case, assuming that your steps have a light for guidance, and if she has experience on steps, I see no reason why she could not go down the stairs at night.

I use baby gates everywhere I don't want my toddler to be....Like the kitchen, laundrey room and stairs...there are diffrent sizes and heights you can buy. Try Toys R Us, they have a huge selection. Just place the gate at her door if she needs you you'll hear her.

Try putting a gate at her door and keep using a moniter, if you have one to listen in if she happens to wake up in the middle of the night.

What I did was place the safety gate in my son's door way. Then when he was being potty trained we moved it so that he could get to the potty but no where else. Hope this helps you.
