Let him know you don't approve and then TRY to let it rest as it is tooo late now.

First of all he is 18+, so I would have to say that you really couldn't do much but complain and make him mad. Some people look at tattoos as if the person that has them are bad people but really they are expressing their personality. You might as well except it and complement him on the nice work (hopefully he was smart enough to get a professional to do it).
Second of all you are not the one that woke up with so get over it you won't have to look at it everyday.

As long as it is not offensive, it's all good. If it's a nice one and you like it, tell him so. If you don't like it, don't criticize. Either don't say anything or just ask some simple questions like; did it hurt; how long did it take to do it; how do you take care of it until it's healed, and leave it at that. Don't sweat the small stuff. There are far worse things he could be doing than getting a little ink on his body. So if that's all he's done, count your blessings.

Well 18 is a legal age. I would probally be very upset but i would have to come to terms with it. I would remind him it was his body and now he has to live with what he did to it. Maybe he wont get another one. My son has one and he says its enough now that he knows the cost of getting them removed......Look it up on computer print it out for him show him that if later down the line he dosent want it no more show him the cost of getting it removed. He will think twice before getting another one. I HOPE!!!

Not too much to add to what the others said, but if its a particularly offensive tattoo, the parent still has the right to request that it is covered when he comes to visit.

There really is not much to say he is 18. I think I would ask him if he had it done at a reputable shop

nothing, it depends on your upbringing....if you are conservative it will be a little bit shocking....show your disappointment. If you are not....just appreciate it and if the tattoo looks not good suggests a good one.
