I don't know that it's a "tip"..my dog always loved to be shaved with the clippers, felt like a massage. However, it was easiest to do it on a higher setting then do it again to make it shorter. It did always seem to help when she was damp- not soaking wet.

If it's the first time you're shaving him yourself, yes it will take a couple of hours and you will need a hair trimmer (perferrably a pet one). My golden retriever/shepherd mix is very alert of every little thing and I barely know him so I needed him to trust me. I had to take precautions unless I wanted to lose my arm. jk! Well, I tied him down, brushed him (releases the oils from the skin to the coat shaving would be easier & loosen up tangles), took the hair trimmer out, showed it to him, let him sniff it, turned it on in front of him, giving him a minute to get used to the sound, before I started trimming him, I rubbed the trimmer against his body slowly for a minute to let him get used to the vibrations, then viola! I trimmed his hair yay!
Sorry, if i'm not of any help, I don't think there are any short cuts or anything. Grooming plays a big part in your relationship with you and your dog. I know you're a busy person but try to take the time out of your busy schedule to help him out. He'll thank you for it really! Not only do you get to spend time with him but you're keeping him healthy as well. Good luck!

make sure he's wearing a muzzle when you shave him....otherwise he'll bite you. Start with the legs before moving to the body and head....always leave the head for the last because it's more traumatizing for the dog if he's 'attacked' on the head first. When you get started on the legs, he's more mentally prepared. Make sure you use an appropriate shaver specially for grooming dogs. You wouldn't want to cut into his skin accidentally.
Also, prepare a blunt pair of scissors in case his fur is tangled up. Do cut away the tangled fur before shaving so that your shaver wouldn't have tangled fur jammed in it.

biggest thing is good clippers. yes, you are going to pay more for good clippers than, if you say, take your dog to the grooming shop, but they will last forever. The reason for good clippers is a husky/shepard has thick hair. cheap clippers are going to bind up, and therefore take forever. Get a nice pair of Wahl, or Osters for about a hundred bucks. They wont bind as much, and you can get quiet ones for the skitish dogs. Relax your pooch first, pet him/her for awhile. Start off just getting him used to the clippers noise. If he's cool with it, start in a less noticable spot than, oh, his back. (in case he flips out and you can't finish) If he is still cool, drive on. get the thick stuff with the grain, finish up against. Good luck.

Make sure you have 911 on speed dial, because I think that dog will try to kill you.
Why does he need to be shaved? If he's shedding, you can just brush him.
