I mean, is "ego" an illusion? Are "we" only asking this at all....because of our ability to say "I" in the first place?

You are you because you had some specific and unique karmas(thoughts, words and deeds). Every person has fixed and unfixed karmas. That's why when your father and mother's chromosomes matched, it also matched with the karma present in your intermediate existence at that time and you took a form in your mother's womb as YOU not anyone else.

Back in the blackness before my birth, my spirit roamed for a body to enter.. when I came across this one, and anaylzed his future if I were to be him, I decided sure.. this sounds fun.
When I die, it'll happen again.

If I were someone else, I wouldn't be me!
So to be me I have to be who I am and who I am can't be someone else because he/she would not be who they were, but me. And if that person were me, My family would miss me.
