I'm looking at a 1996 Dodge neon 4-w/ an automatic transmission and 69k miles. I've done some research about it, but I would like to hear back from people that have direct expierence and knowledge about this year/make.

Thanks!

I have/have had four Neons - '95, '01,'02 and '05. My '95 was one of the first delivered; an automatic. The others are manual transmission equipped. All have been fun and reliable cars. Although I experienced no problems worth mentioning, many other owners of first generation Neons ('95-'99) have reported head gasket failures and multiple oil leaks. The consumer testing magazine, Consumer Reports, has always rated Neons, as good for solid fill and little else. That said, Neons are a cult car. They are inexpensive to buy. There is a plethora of aftermarket/performance parts available. If you pass on this particular car, there are thousands of other Neons calling your name. Note that the manual cars are noticeably faster and more economical than automatics. About 10% of Neon came with stick shift.

Good cars in general super fuel mileage. Service the transmission about every 40000 mi. Change the timing belt before100000 mi. And you shouldnt have much to worry about. I have personally never saw one with a blown head gasket, but I have saw a bunch of em leak oil out from under the back side of the head gasket. The neons probably have the lowest repair rate of all the chrysler vehicles, In my shop that is.

The two biggest problems you will have is blown head gaskets and failing air conditioning. At that mileage make sure the timing belt was changed recently if not run away. I have 135,000 miles on mine. At 100k I needed a new head gasket and the ac failed for the third time at about 110 k. No longer under waranty so i have not fixed. Otherwise a fine auto that I have driven for almost 10 years.

The name "Neon" has become a terrible name for Dodge and they eventually dropped the model for a better model. The original 2 and four door models eventually became just a four door model after the redesign before it was canceled entirely.

A 10 year old Neon will be a pain in the butt to keep. The quality just isn't there, and it clearly shoes itself. The drive, well, its a bottom line car so no real complaints, but its just not worth it if you ask me.

Well it seems that everyone who answered this question doesn't like neons but i would have to disagree with them I personaly own 3 95's one has a haun turbo kit installed on it and it will blow away anything from mustangs to corvettes plus when driving it under normal conditions it still maintains superb gas milage i wouldn't recommend any other car.

My only "run in" with a Dodge Neon.
one took out a mailbox, sideswiped a tree, plowed through a gravel driveway and pushed my Lincoln Town car 10 feet. The Neon was totally gone. i don't remember a place on it that wasn't dented, and it totaled my Lincoln. Of course the guy was drunk and had no insurance, so I was out a car and almost a front porch. Oh yea, he walked away, except when the cops arrested him for DUI. PS- MY lINCOLN WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY.!!!!!

Go to http://neons.org/ to check out that particular model. All early Neons had leaking head gasket problems.

well almost guaranteed that it will need a head gasket sooner than later, no matter what you do the brakes will squeal and some early ones have tranny problems
