You can't be sure until you really meet them and get to know them. Anyone can pretend to be ANYBODY online. You have to be careful.

Short answer is, you can't. If you are online dating, then the best thing to do is to cut the cr*p and arrange to meet the guy/girl as soon as possible, face to face.
It's very hard to detect lies in writing, so the longer you chat online, the more likely you are to be conned by false information. Plus, the more likely you are to build up a picture of the person which could be unrealistic, so you are more likely to be disappointed when you meet him/her.
If you agree to meet in a coffee shop or restaurant, it's perfectly safe. You don't have to reveal your phone number or other personal information to do that. Face to face, it will be much easier for you to spot lies. Let's face it, you will be in a better position than if you'd met them in a bar or a nightclub, because you already have some background info.
If the person lives too far away to get together over coffee, then the chances of a successful relationship are very low anyway.

You can't be sure that they are who they say. That's part of the fun of talking online and part of the problem, too. If you visit over the course of several weeks or months, you should be able to get to know them pretty well, though. You should not trust them with too much personal information until you know them well. Unfortunately, the world is full of liars.
Keep your head on straight and don't let anyone push you too fast while you are trying to get to "know" them. Keep in mind at all times, that your time is valuable and if they are not the type of person you want to talk with, put them on "ignore," and forget about them. INSIST that you be treated as a lady or gentleman. You are not a public toilet, so don't let anyone treat you like trash or talk trash to you. Have fun. Keep in mind the Golden Rule by treating others the way you want to be treated, and you should do fine. Good luck!! :)

There is no way to know, especially if you are trusting by nature. Certain types of people feed on that and are more than willing to take advantage of a trusting individual.
I myself was had, forged pictures, completely fabricated life. Supposedly, single, with no children, just to discover after some detective work, 5 kids, divorced, on welfare...nice eh?
Some people are so miserable in their real lives that they escape to the net and create another persona and emulate what they wish they were. Keep that in mind. Yet, don't automatically distrust everyone because of a very few bad people. I have faith that the good people outweigh the bad. My personal point of view, make them earn your trust, I've made many friends on the net, that I consider very close. Just choose wisely.

One thing I have learned... when talking to a person, be it online or face to face... you only know as much about that person as that person tells you. You only know the sides of the person that that person shows you. Sure, the internet is dangerous when communicating with strangers... but you never really know a person. Always be careful.

You can't be sure... At the start of the conversation don't give out any important info, but if you feel they are geniune, then be as open as you would like. You have to have a sixth sense, as unfortunately there are bad, mental and/or strange people out there...
Good Luck

Been there and done that. You can't. Be very careful. I have to say though I feel there are some genuine ones on line but not all are.
