Hi there...it's never safe to give human medication to animals without first consulting a vet. Causes of constipation could be as a result to many things which only a vet best could diagnose and then treat especially since he is a senior cat. If it's a medical problem giving anything at this point may make it more problemmatic or worse...fatal. Anything we recommend could cause more harm rather than help even if we all mean well. A vet is a trained medical professional therefore please consider giving your vet a ring in the morning to help you with some solutions.

Pumpkin is a natural fibre laxative that works best.

First of all -- is he urinating? Because if he's not urinating & he's straining (he could possibly be blocked -- urinary blockage) & if this is the case -- HE NEEDS TO SEE HIS VET IMMEDIATELY! Otherwise - if he's urinating - & he might be constipated, definitely give the canned pumpkin a try (works well!). If you are not sure he's urinating - & you have other cats - put him somewhere separately so you can monitor his urinations. Usually (not always) if a cat is blocked -- they will go from being blocked for awhile - trying to strain to urinate, then lick themselves, & if it's longer than a day - they usually stop eating, drinking, etc. because their kidney blood values go higher mimicking kidney failure -- because the cat cannot pee.
**I hope he's constipated & the canned pumpkin works**

when my friends cat had this problem (shes had cats for years) she simply gave her a tin of tuna in olive oil for her dinner, she went just fine the next day
Dont old people often have this problem? maybe speak to ur vet a bout an appropriate diet for an older cat, could be somethign thats easily fixed. After all if its age related seems a bit cruel to be giving him 'quick fixes' all the time

Ive just checked ur additional details, u never said he couldnt pee either, thats serious in animals or humans, could be a sign of spinal cord injury or urinary tract infection, find the money to get him to a vet if he isnt peeing, thats serious
please let us know how he goes

They sell Laxatone in pet stores and you can use that for your cat. About three little swidges a day. Put it on your finger and into or around his mouth.

This is not good for longterm use however. That or vaseline can coat the stomach and intestines so that nutrients are not well absorbed.

At www.littlebigcat.com Dr. Jean Hovfe has an article titled "Constipation"in the article library. Read that and see if you can get some further ideas on how to treat your cat.

My Cat Is Constipated

2016-09-30 00:49:44 · answer #5 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

IF THE CAT IS NOT PEEING, THE FIRST THING YOU MUST DO IS TAKE HIM TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY. If he isn't peeing, that means he is blocked, and he needs unblocked, which can only be done by a vet. It's not something you can do at home, and you cannot wait expecting it to clear up on its own. If you wait, he won't make it. I had a cat who this happened to, then later reoccured, and unfortunately he eventually died from it because his kidneys failed (even with seeing the vet). He was only four-years-old. The blockage itself, I was told, comes from cheap, dry cat food and can come from tap water. Always give your male cats distilled jug water from the grocery store. Wal-Mart sells it for 64 cents a gallon.

NO. Human drugs can kill a cat. Why are you giving a cat enemas? If a cat has a clean little box, they will generally go when they need too. If they are not going in the littler box, they might be going elsewhere in the house. Check out the plants, and closets and other places that the cat likes to go after they eat.

At that age, take him to the vet as soon as possible. But, if you can't get him in right away, try feeding him some of canned pumpkin, no more than a tablespoon or so.

With my older cat, it was urinary issues. After a visit to the vet and several overnight stays, they wound up with an IV or 2 and he is on the urinary tract formula of food.
