Microsoft was offering Vista beta not that long ago for customer preview but it's now closed.

Other free open beta products:

Internet Explorer 7:

FireFox nightly test builds:

http://www.mozilla.org/developer/#builds

OpenOffice snapshot builds:

Windows Defender beta:

NVIDIA beta drivers:

Many mfr's do beta testing. Unfortunately Vista is closed to new test candidates right now (not that it probably can't be found somewhere is cyberspace).

From Microsoft's Vista page:
Windows Vista Customer Preview Program

Thank you for your interest in Windows Vista. The Customer Preview Program is now closed. We have reached our program capacity and no new orders are being accepted. We apologize for any inconvenience.

The information on this page is intended for Customer Preview Program participants. Participants will receive an e-mail message with additional information when Windows Vista Release Candidate 1 (RC1) is available later this year. Thank you for testing Windows Vista.

Microsoft is testing many new products, google Windows Live and see what is going on. Most betas require personal info because they are testing the software and want true/accurate results.

Yep, you are a little late. Microsoft closed the Vista preview about 2 weeks ago from what I heard.
