As an ex Army Officer, I grade the following:
1. Loyalty, polite, discussions based on facts
2. Justice to juniors and respect to seniors
3. Most important of all the above is "punctuality" - execute all the entrusted works as per the norms based on Military law books. Don't try to misinterupt any, for any-body's personal benifits or self.
4. Keep your health ready for combat at any climatic/weather condition. So you have to do all the spcified morning PT etc. If you fail, you will be an easy prey to your enemy.

I had the prefect Army Infantry captain once. He was a West Pointer who did his job to perfection. He knew how to keep up the moral of the troops, while at the same time endoctrinating hardcore training and P.T. He would review the platoons regularly, and set the example by out doing his fellow troops. In the Army the officers always ate last when it came to field chow, and made sure the safety and health of their men was kept up.

depends on what you mean by good.
a good career officer only needs to focus on one thing, mission acomplishment. if they do every thing they are told to do, get everything done the way its wanted everytime, then they will look good to their superiours and do well career wise.
a good troop officer looks after troop welfare number one. and while that gives them supports of their troops, and they would do anything for this officer, it doesnt always acomplish the mission and doesnt look so good to the higher ups.
the officer i want, and that goes for commisioned warrant and non commisioned types, is one that does both. can get the job done right and take care of me how i think i should be. but i have yet to meet any military leader able to do this. something somewhere needs to be sacrificed

The ability to achieve objectives.

The ability to adapt and overcome obstacles.

The ability to maintain discipline and order.

The ability to lead rather than merely command.

War is NOT the last option - it is the next-to-last. Surrender is the last, for then the commander places his people at the mercy of the enemy in a world where few enemies are merciful.

As Gandhi put it, violence is preferable to cowardice.

A good officer knows how to keep morale up, and all that other stuff. But a really good Officer is one that when the sh*t hits the fan........he'll be in the middle of it with the grunts.
