fred,
And Philip broke out and said, "Show us the Father, and it will sufficeth us." Jesus said unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet... thou knowest me not, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou... Shew us the Father? When God was truly revealed, He was manifested in the flesh.

In a nutshell Phillip was asking what the Father is like... show Him to us so we'll know. Jesus was saying the He has lived His life on Earth as the Father lives His in Heaven. So Jesus believed His disciples should have known what the Father was like by watching His example. He was also saying that He and His Father are one in purpose too; which is why He said a few verses earlier that He was the only way to the Father. I have to disagree with the person who answered and said that Jesus didn't claim to be divine. That's what John 14 is about... you just have to read between the lines but there is definitely a claim to being deity in these verses.

Try reading John 17:21,22. Jesus prayed regarding his followers: That they may all be one , and that they may be one even as we are one.
So ask yourself, did all of Jesus' disciples become part of the trinity? No They come to share a oneness of purpose with the Father and the Son. Unity of same belief.
God is the one true God and Jesus is his SON.

If you were there in His presence at the time, His comment would take on a different meaning. He was acting on the Fathers behalf. The Lord had sold out His specific will to the Fathers will so that both would act as one. He lived that kind of life to set us an example to follow. http://www.carm.org/doctrine/100truths.htm

Jesus means God is in Him. If you have seen and known Jesus, you would see and know God as well.

He meant that by looking at his ways of spiritual life and obiding as He did in life then you would see an example of how the Father in Heaven would live if He were on Earth.....the Bible is poetic.
And beautiful.Jesus was Gods Son...not the Father Himself...God.Amazing Man....I can't wait to meet Him in my Afterlife.

He said this because of the HOLY TRINITY "God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit." So in a sense Jesus is God and God is Jesus
