I don't know whether I have pricked myself but I feel a tingling, pricking sensation in my left thumb from yesterday when I touch it or try to do things like typing in a keyboard, and I'm doing it now without using my left thumb. How do I know whether something has penetrated into the finger, and how do I get it out, if so? Please suggest a remedy I can try out at home.

dip your finger in cold water and try to pick the sliver with tweezers.

Well if you don't remember pricking yourself then it could be a pinched nerve. If it is a sliver of something it with probably get red and puffy and pushed out... IF it is a pinched nerve you could use soemthing like advil and/or benedryl for comfort and to reduce swelling... This will reduce the sensation of pins and needles and give the nerve time to heal. If it doesn't feel better in afew days I would get it checked out by a professional..

Apply a layer of glue. Allow to dry and peel off and see if your finger feels better. If that doesn't work take a sharp knife and gently scrap along your finger and feel for a 'click' if so you still have something in your finger, get a magnifying glass and look for it. Use a sharp knife edge to scrap out the object, or use a set of fine tweezers. If none of this works, bandage and use neosporin.

It could be a splinter or a sticker from some plant. It will be uncomfortable for a few days to a week, then it will fester up and you can remove it with a needle. You could get it now with a needle if its visible, but be sure the needle has been under a flame a few seconds.

Try Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulfate) in water. Soak your thumb in the solution and the splinter should come out (or at least surface, and then you can pull it out with tweezers). I'm pretty sure you can find it in a drug store.

Elmers glue !!!

Ok it sounds silly but it works. You coat the area with elmers glue and if there is anything sticking you that has any edge at all, the glue will adhear to it.
Then when it is good and dry, peel off the glue and what ever it is should come with it.
