what does desole mean in english... it has the little dashes over both the "E's"

It is pronounced....= day , zo, lay....

very easy...

for example:
je suis desole de ne pas parler=i'm sorry for not calling
je suis desole, je dois m'en aller=excuse me, i have to go

you can hear it in madonna's song sorry (first thing she says : je suis désolée (i'm sorry))
