BECAUSE THEY GET NERVOUS in a City that is diverse and large. Actually its quite safe, aside from the jokes.

New York is a very large city. I suppose the more people, the more chances there are of danger. There are so many different cultures/groups that may spark conflict, plus it's a very fast city with the largest amount of non-affluent ghetto areas.
I'm from that area and don't think it's that dangerous unless you're foolish and don't act wisely when going out and about. For instance, you wouldn't go to Central Park at night (or any park for that matter), but it's lovely for a day outing. Just act smart.

If your not from New York, and your in New York for what ever reason it could be a dangerous place if you go into the wrong neighborhoods....

every large city in the world is dangerous, to a degree. If you're in the wrong neighborhood, looking out of place, naturally ,you're going to be in trouble. If you blend in and have the right attitude you can go anywhere.

Ummmmm.... Because it is. Just the way people drive in N.Y.C. is bad enough, and that doesn't even take into the account of the muggers, buggers and thieves. And the your politicians, it was kinda safe until you elected Hitlery Rotten Clinton. That really ruined everything.

Oh you can get get yourself completely screwed if you know exactly where and when to go. Other than that, just about anything south of Columbia University is fine. (even the stuff north of it, provided you're street smart)
