I do not believe anyone can become a pro at anything within minutes of some simple Googling. For instance, I am a computer programmer. If you want to master programming in C++, I would love to find a website that is 1: complete 2: comprehensive and 3: allows feedback.

Simple Internet learning will not allow for questions, unless you search the site or the 'Net in general for the answer.

Also, as others have pointed out, most people need the one on one interaction; not only for education, but because vocal tone inflictions can carry far more than a text book reading could.

Plus, you get a wonderful piece of paper that says "You did it" at the end. ;)

Unfortunately, not everyone has access to the internet. Also, some people lack motivation or discipline to complete an online class. Not only this, some people have different learning styles and need to be in a classroom environment with face-to-face instruction in order to absorb what they are being taught.

Because internet classes, while they do have some use, are generally not a substitute for in-class instruction. It's just difficult to compete with a living, breathing teacher that's actually there with you as you learn, who can help you along and adjust their teaching to the needs of the students.

You get a lot more out of having someone actually explain something to you and answer your questions than you do just reading about it online. And before you say you can ask questions on this site, you have no way to know if the person answering knows what they're talking about or not.

Parents don't want their kids underfoot all day. Schools are a wonderful excuse to get them out of the house for most of the day. ;)
