Hmm, A doesn't make much sense. "Expand" means more that something is getting bigger (like a balloon expanding). "Extend" and "prolong" make more sense in the sentence. They are pretty close in definition, and both would make sense, so I'd pick either B or C (maybe C?).

Well OK, this is going to be difficult to explain, but I will try!

Extend comes from the Latin tendere, to stretch; expand comes from Latin pandere, to spread.

In both physical and metaphorical use, extend tends to be used for enlargement along a single axis or in a single direction (my boundary extends from A to B), where expand tends to mean spreading out in many directions (gas expands to fill a vacuum).

PS> I think the answer to the above sentence you gave should be B, you may want to double check the answer since we are not agreeing. Good luck!

The answer should be B, to make the time longer. Expand would be to stretch an object. Prolong would also work, to make longer in time. Length is a measurement of how long an object is.
You're doing well, it isn't easy.

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of online courses which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

A is NOT the right answer... are you sure your teacher is so knowlegeable.... I have known of teachers making mistakes...

Extend= when "time" is related..
Expand= like a balloon.. it expand when you blow it...
Prolong= synonym = same as extend
length= mesure ... it is ...2 feet in length...., etc...

Hope this helps....
