right click on the desktop. choose properties. click on the settings tab. click advanced. go to the adapters tab and then click on list all modes. click on whatever screen resolution you perfer with 256 colors written next to it.

You can do that by pressing right click for the program's shortcut that you want it to work in 256 colours, select properties and in the Compatibility tab you will see what you want in the Display setting.

right click on the program file you are needing to run in 256 colors, click on compatibility, and set it to run in 256 colors
