It is a little bit complicated because it has many verb tenses!!!
You just have to study and practice a lot!!!!
You must use both, tapes and books, it will be easier for you to understand and make the correct pronunciation.
Good luck with your Spanish

It depends on your definition of "difficult". It's harder than, say, brushing your teeth in the morning, and it's easier than, say, rocket science.
All sarcasm aside, your attitude, the teaching methods used, and a lot of other things have to do with how well you will do with learning a new language.
You haven't given enough information about which tapes and books you are considering. There are many different teaching methods out there and whatever materials you use should use the most current teaching methods. Stay away from any book or tape that encourages you to do a lot of translation between English and Spanish or memorizing of dialogues in Spanish. These are old teaching methods and have proved to be less effective. Materials informed by more current language-teaching theory will have you reading and listening to a lot of Spanish, and will have you getting meaning out of the Spanish material without providing it in an English translation also. Another sign of a good language course is that you will listen to and read a new grammatical structure before you are required to use it.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. LOL! Yes, tapes would be better than books because you can hear pronunciation. I had three years of Spanish and know a few words. The nouns are feminine and masculine and conjugating verbs can get tricky, but it does all make sense really. More so than English which is a hodgepodge of languages and evolved slang.
Remember, if you don't use it, you'll lose it.

It depends on the person as to how they will take the lessons, I found them fairly easy. I would prefer tapes, because you can hear how the words are supposed to be pronounced, and that helps A LOT! Also, if you know someone who's first language is Spanish, ask them for help, and try to talk to them in Spanish only as you are learning, it will help with conversational speech.

from my experience, spanish was pretty easy to pick up. however, it'll get a little more difficult with conjugating verbs as you go on. it's not too bad though. if you really want to learn a language fast, i think the best thing to do is spend a good amount of time in a spanish speaking country.

not difficult at all. i would recommend most of all having direct interaction as you learn, like a teacher or tutor. otherwise a book may be the next best thing. pronunciation is very easy, once u know the alphabet. seeing words on a page will help more that trying to visualize how a word is spelled and stuff on tapes. good luck!

if you want to learn to speak and write, use both. It's hard for English speakers to get used to the idea that inanimate objects have a gender. For me, that is the hardest part of learning one of the romance languages. Good luck.

No, they are not difficult at all. I think books are better to learn the grammar, but for boosting your speaking skills getting a native speaker lover is the best ;)

My boyfriend is learning it from the Rosseta stone language system and he's learned so much from the beginning, its a very good program... i would recommend it to you...and i'd say combinations of things work better for pronounciation and such...
good luck!
