It seems like the generic or off-label small cereals/snacks/etc. are so much more flavorful and hardy. Oatmeal especially. You get at least 20% more per serving. Maybe the "major" companies don't push the smaller ticket items as much, knowing consumers will buy them just out of brabd awareness. By the way, I am not a marketing guru or anything. This is just casual observation

good question, considering they are made by the same companies, just sold under a private label. and notice how they never say "made by", only "distributed by XYZ company"

I've never found 'off brand' to be better, and in most cases it is worse. Sure brand recognition is a selling feature, because once you find a taste you like you tend to stay with it. Generic or house brands are manufactured in the same plant as the name brands. The only difference is they use the cheapest ingredients they can because the retailer wants the cost kept as low as possible. Not a lot of people think about this, but the generic cereals and like products are not made by smaller factories, but by the large commercial giants. There are only six or seven multinationals that control the majority of all food grown and shipped in the world(no, don't go quoting me the little regional factory that has a few products on your local super market shelf, these are specialty or niche manufactures and don't count in the overall picture)

the "name" brand companies can put less into each packet because of the people now days. People always want the "best" so they think that the more they see it on T.V. or in magazines that it is better than everything else. so even though the product might not be as good they dont have to worry because they have enough money they can pretty much do as they wish

Some off-brand foods have transfat. Off-brands are smaller companies that have smaller factories and they can't pay to mass produce as much as the brand names. So if their product isn't good than they're screwed. :]
