i am planning to update my bios, but when i read my motherboard manual it says...wrong or incorrect update may result to system failure or malfunction... question: if i update my bios and installed the incorrect bios how can i go back to my previous bios?
is there a way to go back to previous bios? how?

i know that im erasing my motherboards flash memory, so im very cautious... i would end up replacing it, if ive made a mistake...

thnx in advance!

Your are treading on thin ice; there are few operations that can literally make your computer inoperative quicker than a bad BIOS upgrade attempt.

1. First, you absolutely have to make sure that you have the correct utility and BIOS update file. This is more difficult that you might think; the exact model and version of motherboard are required. Assuming everything is OK and you have the proper software, then go to step #2.

2. You almost always have to boot from a floppy disk which has been configured to run the update program, OR you have to have a functional understanding of DOS (not many people do anymore). If you are OK with both of these, go to #3.

3. Run the update utility and file and pray that there is no power outage, voltage spike, or other glitch during the update which usually takes between 30 seconds and a few minutes. If anything goes wrong here, then you will be unable to even start your computer.

4. Assuming everything went OK, all of your customized BIOS settings (sounds like you are the type that knows how to tweak them) have been reset to factory defaults and you will have to reconfigure them. The computer should reboot OK at this point.

If #4 did not go OK then it will be unlikely that you will be able to restore to previous state unless the updater has that feature buildt in to it (most do not).

Once I botched a BIOS update and had to purchase a NEW BIOS chip for the motherboard (fortunately they are relatively simple to remove). Cost $45 and three days waiting.

Unless there is some spectacular reason to the new version I highly discourage this operation (of course, this is what makes doing it so fun!)

Good luck.

Usually those update utility would make a backup of old BIOS or telling you where to get the older, A safeguard also exist to block wrong motherboard updates. Usually a restoration of older BIOS is to run again "update" using the older BIOS image instead the newer.

Besides that, you already know cautious.
