My dog has had puppies about 7 weeks ago and I will be giving them away here soon. My roomate wants to keep one of these puppies but I wonder if there is any thing I need to know about raising one of these puppies with the same mother and father and of there is any problems associated with this type of relationship. This will be her last litter and the male dog has already been fixed.

There is nothing wrong with it. In fact, psychologically, it will be easier on the mother to have one or two of her pups up until they are 4-6 months old. Some dogs, like humans, go through withdrawl from their pups taken too soon. Rule of thumb is to wait until the pups are 8-10 weeks before selling them or giving them away. This way, mom has spent time with them and knows the pups are fine and healthy at the time of their departure. Also, when you sell or give pups away, don't have the mother in the same room or perferably in the same area. Moms can get very diffensive of their pups even after 8-10 weeks. Oh, if the pup staying with you is a male, keep him away from mom when she goes into heat again. Male dogs usually start the whole action of being ABLE to reproduce as young as 5 months. However, like humans, its unsafe for both dogs and the possible pups.

I kept one from our litter (and I have both mom and dad). I kept her mainly because she really wanted to be part of the pack. Even from an early age, she was imitating the older dogs. She also picked my dh as her favorite person. I loved keeping her since she plays with her mom and dad. She learned very quickly where to potty and how to act because she was following the older dogs.

The only problem is that they can be very close to their parent/s (usually the mother). My friend had an IG mother/daughter pair. The mother got hit by a car and died. Within a few months the daughter had also passed on. He felt she never got over her mother's death.

I usually keep a puppy when I have a litter. As long as the other dogs are mentally stable and relate well to other dogs they should be fine. My girls usually help to raise the pups by disciplining them when they get out of control and teaching them proper "dog manners".

You know, we have done this and it works out great. You get to see how they act as a pack, who is the dominant and who is the nurturer. Believe it or not, the father is more caring to the puppy who is now 1 year old!

no there should be no drawbacks to this. if the puppy is a male just make sure he doesn't mate with mom. also, if the pup is a male be on the lookout for alpha dog issues with dad.
