Can one be an atheist and still believe in a soul?

I am the perfect person to answer this question... So, here it goes: I am a person who would not be considered religious, because I have a difficult time believing in something that I have not experienced myself. I do not know if God exists, I haven't seen,heard or experienced him in any way. I'm not saying he doesn't, but I'm not saying he does either; however, I know for a fact that our souls do go on after we are dead. I know this for a fact because my deceased mother came to me in the form a ball of light and energy, I could see her face, and hear her telepathically tell me " Hi honey, I'm alright" and then she faded and another woman's face, whom I did not know appeared and then disappeared immediately. Now I know how crazy that sounds, however I am absolutely sure that this happened to me. Our souls do continue on in the form of energy, and it is true that they are able to speak to us telepathically; however my mother did not mention that she was with God, or that she was in heaven. Since another woman's image popped up, I guess they travel together in this form of energy. Sounds strange to me too, but I do feel the need to share this info. with others because it is my only experience of this kind. When my mother was dying, I was beside her and expressed over and over that she better contact me and tell me that she was alright, and she did. It took her two months, on a day that I wasn't even thinking about her. We had a incredible bond, and I knew that if there were any possible way for her to contact me, she would, and she did. I miss her greatly, she was the best mother in the world. I haven't heard from her since...wonder why?

There is nothing wrong with doubting religion. Some never get
over the story telling aspects of it, and of course it gets pushed
on us by a lot of self-righteous buttheads. Who screw everything
that moves when they are young. And when they get married, they think they're holy. And if a young person gives in to weakness, they treat the young person like they are filth. (That's not an excuse to throw your heart away, I'm just making a point.)

Sure you could believe in a soul if you were an atheist. But it would not be the holy kind. It would be more like a pantyhose kind. All gauzy and empty.
