a doctor will initially evaluate you to see if you are a good candidate for physical therapy - if the doctor decdes that you would benefit from therapy, he will write an order for a physical therapist to do a full evaluation of the patient. this is a very detailed evaluation that includes many steps. the doctor him or herself will not perform the detailed evaluation but rather use his or her judgement to decide whether the patient will benefit from therapy or not.

Only a licensed PT can do a PT evaluation. A physician may refer you to therapy, but legally a physician cannot perform the evaluation.
