I was reading and responding to this question and a lot of people say it's illegal to shoot a feral cat that ventures into your property and causes trouble. I remember reading this incident on Pet-abuse.com that said otherwise and the cops said a bullet was as humane as euthanization shots. What are people's sources when they say that it is illegal to shot a cat? Is it also illegal to shot a cougar or a coyote? I'm also own a cat but I don't think people should say things which aren't true and frighten others with propaganda.

People I've not talking beating an animal, I'm talking about shooting, usual within one of two shots, it's instant death. This is not a case of prolonging death or torture which is what SPCA and legal enforcement are against. And please supply your source or your own experience, not what you feel or personally believe.

As near as I can tell, it is dependent on local laws. I have lived in places where it was legal if the animal in question was a "nuisance" and in places where shooting *any* animal was considered illegal.

Edited to add source:
All of the laws are based on proving ownership or lack of and vary from one area to another.

Cougars are endangered where I come from & I would be hardpressed to shoot one unless of course it was a life or death situation.Coyotes on the other hand are thriving in these parts & most people have a love / hate relationship with them. I lost a dog to them last year & a few chickens this spring. When they get to close I shoot over their heads or sick the rotties on them.As for feral cats I don't have that problem because of the dogs but I doubt if I would shoot them.Even though cats are responsible for the decline in songbirds & small mammals, its not the cats fault.I'm all for shooting the irresponsible owners of cats who fail to spay or neuter their pets. Now there lies the problem.

Its animal abuse and you can go to jail for it. Cities with SPCA's will make a case of it and they should. Other cities without SPCA's may. In a town close by a man was arrested for beating his dog and we do not have a SPCA.

WELL i live in lincoln county , oregon, and it is ILLEGAL to shoot a cat or any animal around here, you call the sheriff or animal control and if they cannot capture the animal it is up to them if they are going to shoot it. it is not propaganda it is just that people (including myself) tend to think of kitties as one of our family, and we certainly would not shoot one of our family now would we!

Whre I live, by the time someone argues the question, the cat is no longer tearing screens or paw printing windows.
