've got a second hand BBQ that is rusty in every part. I bought a set of grills, but I am still having doubts whether the BBQ is safe for cooking. I can install the new grills but I am affraid that the rustyness from the cap will spill over the food when I cook.

I would assume that since you're replacing the grill grates (the only part the food actually touches) then it should be safe. However I understand your situation, we had a very old grill that had rust all over the inner part of the cover.

The best thing you could do is to take a wire brush and get rid of all the excess rust....better yet, you could take a dremel tool or a high speed sander with a wire attachment and just grind all the rust out. Then I would rinse it really well...and most likely spray some high-temperature BBQ paint on it. Shouldn't take more than half a day.

Before putting the new grills in, hose the whole thing down, brush the inside of the lid to remove the loose rust that may fall onto the food. DO NOT USE RUST REMOVER or solvents. Let it air dry and finally, first food you cook should be hamburgers with the lid closed. The oils released will coat the unit and prevent the rust from returning.

I say clean the heck out of it. As long as the food isn't toching any of the rust I think it might be ok. However, I can't see how actually rusty the BBQ is , If it is really that rusty I say toss it and get a new one.

Probably won't hurt you, but you will get more iron in your diet -seriously! They used to say to cook with an iron frying pan to get more iron for anemic people! Just wire brush the grill as best you can & use it until you can afford a new one. Bon appetit!
