I see that a lot of kids post their homework questions on yahoo answers and people just give them the answers. Doesn't this bother anyone else? I mean, these kids don't have to study, think, or learn anything for themselves. All they are learning is that its easy to cheat and coast through life. The math and science sections are where I'm most disgusted by this. After all, these are the subjects where children are supposed to learn how to think critically and draw conclusions. Parents, any thoughts?

My thoughts exactly!
I respond to those questions with-do your own homework, pay attention in class, and read your textbook.
What they are doing is no different than cheating on a test or copying someone else's paper.

I have a 13 year old and last year she would read(she said) her history lesson but had no clue as to the answers for the review Q's.
I showed her how to scan the chapters for the info and read it over. she did and ended up with all A's and B's at the end of the year, in fact she got an award for
"Most Improved"
I also told her that after studying she still could not answer the question or solve the math, to ask the teacher the next day. She did and discovered that this was acceptable and then had no problem doing it from than on.

The kids who do it on here do so because people give them answers, most likely other kids who are trying to SHOW how SMART they are. I think it makes them feel good about them selves because they can help. (IRONIC huh, cause it doesn't really help the asker learn how to study)

I am a parent. I am also a teacher (of adults). I find that many parents do not help their children. Maybe it is because the children do not ask, the parents do not know how to help, the parents do not even know the subjects.

Teachers are also over-burdened in the classroom. The "No Child Left Behind" has become a "teach for the final test" curriculum.

Textbooks are bought on committee, not necessarily for their helpfulness.

So where is a child going to get help?

If I give an answer, I explain how and why. I do my best to give steps and show reasoning. Perhaps that is enough.

You will notice that there is a clearly marked section for homework help. You do not have to give help there. For that matter, I find it a bit disturbing that some people write "do your own homework" as an answer. Looks like gaming the system for 2 points to me.

I wish schools would teach critical thinking. I am retiring from teaching in private industry probably at the end of this year. I teach nuclear science. I think I will teach tech writing at a Jr Co. level. At least there I can control the environment a tad better than what our poor teachers have at Jr High and HS.

At least the kids care enough to ask.

It is nice to get help on your homework when you are struggling to come up with the correct answer. A lot of this stuff could easily be answered with a little research, but the math I understand, especially if those who answer are giving them the step by step directions about how to complete the problem.

But yes, it is tough when folks give them the answer and they copy it down and learn nothing from it. However, there is a judgement day, that is when they have a test and they fail it because the never bothered to retain the information.

There is nothing more fun as a teacher then to tell a parent their kid does well on their homework, but miserable on a test which probably means they are using their friends or the internet to get the answers without bothering to think about or learn the information.

I have to agree with you. I don't mind helping but kids wont learn if they are just are given the answer. Its much more satisfying for the kid if they arrive at the answer themselves. It does wonder for their self esteem as a student. Cheating themselves out of a true education will only hinder them as life progresses.
Theres nothing better than seeing that light go off in a childs eyes when they truly understand a problem or lesson, finally after working through it.

As a teacher and parent, I agree with you to a certain extent. I have answered some questions here if I can do so by guiding them to find the answer for themselves. I have also scolded some for obvious laziness. But doing the work FOR them by giving answers outright? Absolutely NOT.

I'm more concerned about the so-called "experts" who give wrong answers. I've seen many of these, and I pity the kids who are taken in by them. I'm also concerned about kids who do all their research on the internet, not realizing the difference between a legitimate site and a bogus one.

I think you make a good point. I have answered a couple homework help questions, but now that I've read your statement, I think I will stop. Kids do need to learn for themselves, although I do think it depends on the question they ask. Thanks for your insight :)

I'm not a parent but I totally agree with you. I don't answer questions that are obviously someone trying to cheat on their homework. If they can type in their question, they can look up the answer.

Absolutely not. Why cant we help people out. If kids need to turn to a search engine for help, the help is what they deserve.

We should all practice more niceness.
