Those buggers are the bane of everyone's existence.

If you have Yahoo! Toolbar, run the Anti-spy feature. Otherwise, download Lavasoft's Ad Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ and run it. Often times, if you disconnect the spyware that is at the basis of these programs it can help to shut it off.

Good luck!

Go to www.download.com, then download these two free programs:

1. Spybot search & Destroy

2. Ad-Aware SE personal edition

Between the two of them, they usually can clean most malware infections including rogue toolbars.

Unfortunately, there's a really nasty one called "Cool Web Search" that's infamous- There have been several specific removal tools written just to get rid of it. But there are so many variants, some of them aren't cleaned. You can look up "CWShredder" on Yahoo for more info- I'm hoping that's not the one you have... Even if you do, there's still a chance the latest Ad-Aware and Spybot will clean it.

Finally, I assume you already have some kind of virus protection software running like Norton or McAfee or something? If not, grab AVG Anti-virus free edition while you're on download.com getting the other two programs. All are completely free.

Spy-ware, etc: Ewido.com, ad-aware (www.lavasoft.com), spybot search and destroy (www.security.kolla.de) Google a websearch specific toolbar too.

Depending on your anti-virus, there are two free ones that are superior: www.grisoft.com has AVG, and www.free-av.com has avira anti-vir. You can only run ONE anti virus at a time, but can run multiple spywares. Download and install these programs, and boot your computer to safe mode (hit f8 on a re-start BEFORE windows comes up). Run them from safe mode. Good luck.

Google the exact name of the tool bar. You'll find instructions on how to remove it. Each one is different.

Search for CWS Shredder. CoolWebSearch, 180search, and WebSearch are nasty spywares that are difficult to get rid of. CWS Shredder was written especially for them.

badnervesjones has it right - CWS Shredder is great. Get it at:
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

I would also run spybot, &/or adaware in the future as well as installing spyware blaster:
