My oldest cat Whiskers, who is 11, up until about 2 years ago would not let anyone pet him. Now he gets up on the chair arm beside my mom everytime she sits there. He asks to be petted, and has even started sitting on our laps. What has changed my cat that used to be scared of everything? This is like the equivalent of someone scared of heights jumping out of plane!

It's either one of three things. He finally got use to you and your family. Or one of the members in your family is having health problems, cats are incredible like that. They can sense when people are depressed, sad, dying, etc. Or sad to say he may be on his last months/year and he just wants to be around the people that love him. 11 is getting up there for a cat.

Sounds like he's either FINALLY settled in, or that he knows you are the source of all food, as another poster suggested. Your closing comment cracked me up, BTW.

Just enjoy it and love him like crazy.
P.S. You may NOT enjoy it so much, once he discovers how nice it is to jump up on the bed with you. Cats take their half of the bed out of the middle!

Perhaps as your cat is getting older, he requires more companionship and warmth. Another thought is that maybe his personality has changed due to the aging process. It happens to people - perhaps it happens to cats too.
