Both make great pets-can't really compare as to what better for 2 different species of animal. I have both ,always have had cats and a dog and both important to me. If you measure the love both love but My dog is lab mixed with huskie and a bit too big for my lap

Depends on your living situation, but if it's viable, both! There are pros and cons to both. And actually, you're wrong about dogs being more popular; at last consensus, there are more pet cats in the U.S. than there are pet dogs. Mostly because cats tend to be housed in multiples while dogs tend to be a single pet.

Well, here's my opinion. Cats tend to be better pets because:
When they have to go to the bathroom, they don't make you take them outside, they use their litter box and cover it up themselves. When a dog has to go, whether it's storming, snowing, cold, hot, you gotta take them outside, while a cat is happily inside. They bathe themselves. They're quieter. I think I'd definitely choose a cat.

Cats are very loving and dignified pets. Contrary to what people say, cats do show their affectionate feelings for their owners.
And cats can also be taught tricks.
They are very easy to keep. They know how to go abt and do their biz, don't gobble up their food in one go, odourless or drool.

Dogs are much more fun.
Cats move in and try to boss you around. They're high maintenance critters!
Dogs just like to hang with you. They'll go anywhere with you and they're always happy.
