Whole grain bread is filled with complex carbs. Those are good for you. Simple sugars, found in chocolate bars or other sweets, are bad carbs because they are high in energy but provide no significant source of nutrition.

complex carbs are "good" because the body uses more energy to break them down. Complex carbs are found in whole wheat, bran, etc.
Simple carbs are bad simply because we eat way too much of them. Simple carbs can be found in processed sugar, white flour, etc.

The empty calories in sugary sodas and white breads are bad because they raise your blood sugar rapidly. Better carbs are brown rice, from fruits and veggies.

What you want are low glycemic carbs. Geen veggies and fruit are examples. No white potatoes, white bread, fruit juice, or candy.
