If there is no marking(other than the B) where you would normally find a block number and serial number( under the generator stand), then most likely you have an over the counter motor case(basically just one that never came in a new car, sold over the counter). Nothing rare about this my bus has the same thing : http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f386/patrickm2213/Kombis/IMG_0215.jpg
Now the B could be anything thing honestly, could be the stamping for the person that built the motor. I don't think the motor is out of a later Mexican/south American car since it would had still have had a serial number. Not that it didn't come out of Mexico or Brazil it probably did. Here is a list of block number vw used: http://type2.com/bartnik/enginecodes.htm
Another way to date it is. Does it have an Audi symbol on the oil sump? That is something VW started doing in the mid/late 1970's. If you want to figure out the size then your going to have to break it down to take measurements.
As far as parts JC Whiney sale realy low quailty stuff, as does cip1.com, jbugs, mid american. Basicly they all sale empi, bugpack, they all sale the same junk just under a differnt name, but there cheap and people like that. Protest the made in china junk.

The motor is a 1600 dual port the stock engine motor number is stamped right below the generator/alternator stand the thing you put oil into held to the engine block with four nuts. Your on your own as most air cooled VW parts are in Mexico where they produced the car much longer than here in the states. Smog controls killed the bug. Try Mexican parts dealers? 33 year old anything car parts are hard to find.

B is just the mark for the stardard beetle. As far as places to buy parts, I started a restoration about six month ago. These are the best site to get parts from.
cip1.com is by far the best place to get stock and performance parts. Everything you need. Great prices and most everything is free shipping( total over fifty dollars).
Then it would be CHIRCO. They are great aswell, but less to choose from, not free shipping and mostly performance parts.
There are a few more:
Mofoco for engine parts
BugCity for original hard to find parts.
Mikes bug barn, for misc stuff

If the car is a beetle, it has to be a Vlkswagon & as far as I know, they made their own parts.
Don't know where you live but if you're anywhere near Las Vegas, check out "The Old Volks' Home" for parts.
