Hi, frankly Chiangmai is pretty big, and most foreigners are in the city centre, where you get some shopping. But it will not be comparable to Bangkok, which will have more options.

Chiangmai is best enjoyed as a relaxing place. There are mountain resort with nice views which you can relax in, away from literally people. And you get good authentic Thai food there too. I do know a couple of places, and these are out of the city centre. The climate is cool, so there is no air conditioning necessary in these resorts, just nature and you.

There are hilltribes whom you can visit and if you like, go trekking and visit a few of these original villages. There is river rafting if you do not mind getting a little wet. Or visit an elephant camp and even learn too train to be a mahout, an elephant rider.

In the city centre popular Night Market, you can get local arts and crafts. Visit to the hill-tribes will allow you to buy the tribal carfts already.

As for food, any place will have nice Thai food, and it is not expensive at all. If you do not like it spicy, just let the people there know and it will be fine.

If you like more info on what you can do, you can email me. I will be happy to help.

The town is very small so you will not have a problem finding your way around. I walked almost everywhere I went for shopping and food. You really only need a 2-3 days to see it all there. I recommend taking a cooking class and riding on the elephants for a day (any longer on an elephant and your but will hurt) also they have trekking tours you can do. Anywhere you stay will hook you up with all of this so don't book in advance at all. You will get riped off if you do.

the road to Bo Sang where they make the paper umbrellas has many shops with local crafts, lacquer, celedon, silver, gems, leather, etc. It's worth a half day or even a day if you are really into shopping to rent a car and driver to explore those shops.

For food/show definitely go to one of the kantoke dinners. It's a bit touristy but still fun. I like the Kum Kantoke one the best.

Have a good trip
