The name seems to be a rebirth of mercenary units from the 30 year's war. In the present case, they seemed to be spontaneous formations set out to take sides in the uprisings all over Germany in the early Weimar Republic. The research I've read to date is skimpy, and too judgemental to seem trustworthy.

Check out the book THE GERMAN FREIKORPS 1918-23 by Osprey publications.Its a small ,64 page paperback book.
Its a good introduction on the subject with many photos and pictures.
Another book.More oriented toward Freikorps uniforms is titled GERMAN UNIFORMS,INSIGNIA & EQUIPMENT 1918-1923.
