Three kinds of lice can infest humans - head lice (Pediculus capitis), body lice (P. humanus) and crab (or pubic) lice (Phthirus pubis). The head louse is closely related to the body louse, but their behavior is quite different. Experts disagree on whether or not these two insects are different species. They look nearly identical. However, the head louse stays on a person for its entire life, while the body louse lives in the seams of clothing and is only found on a person when feeding. The body louse is very rare, occurring in unsanitary, crowded conditions, where people wear the same clothing for many days. Crab (or pubic) lice are usually transferred from one individual to another through intimate contact, but occasionally can be transferred in other ways.
Head lice are the most common louse problem in the United States. They are easily spread by physical contact and infestations can occur under the best sanitary conditions. Every year, 6 to 10 million people in the United States have head lice with three-quarters of them being school children less than 12 years old. Girls typically have higher rates of infestation than boys do. However, having shorter hair does not prevent or eliminate infestations. Income level is not a factor in infestation. If one family member is infested with head lice, the risk of infestation for the rest of the family is greater. Usually Caucasians have more problems with head lice due to the shape of the individual hair shaft.

Head lice are tiny, greyish, crawling bugs. When a lice gets in your hair, it clings itself to strands of hair behind your ears, near the neckline and lays its eggs, These eggs are called nits and they are very tiny, almost microscopic and they multiply quickly. So you have lice and nits to get rid of. They are very contagious and it most always starts in public schools. Many peope are ashamed of getting lice, but they should not be. Lice are attracted mostly to clean hair strands because they can attach themselves better and settle in for a long stay. They are not pleasant and it is creepy to think of something like that invading your body. They are relatively easy to get rid of by using lice shampoo. After everyone in the family's heads are washed with the lice shampoo, then all bed sheets need to washed and dried in a hot dryer. Pillows, sofas, carpets should be sprayed with a spray that is just for that. Repeat the shampooing the next day and usually, that's the end of it. It is not uncommon for a person to have lice at least once in their lives. It's just yucky.

Yes. It is a tiny "mite" (a member of the same family as spiders) that lives on the scalp. It can be spread by close contact or sharing hair brushes or bedding. You need a special bug killing lotion to get rid of them. Talk to your pharmacist and follow the directions exactly.

Yes, they are small bugs that live on your scalp. They lay their eggs cemented to the shaft of the hair, and they make you itchy because they bite you.
