Absolutely ! Butter is essentially the exact same thing as shortening anyway.
Also, you can sub apple sauce in for vegetable oil !! You don't even notice the taste and it makes the cake SO fluffy (not to mention much healthier)

It all depends on the desired affect. Colour butter is better for chocolate and dark cakes and shortening is better for white cakes, flavour butter is better. As for the saturated fats that are in butter shortening is better if it is not hydrogenated. Some shortening is even polyunsaturated which can be heart smart.

I always use butter instead of shortening, in all receipts, and I've never had a problem. I think it tends to taste better too.

I would never if it calls for butter then butter it is. Butter always gets a bad rap but it tastes way better

Shortening is fat,butter is fat, margarine is fat. Yes you can. You can also use lard in stead. You can use half shortening half butter.

I think youwill find cake made with butter is better.
