I felt a sting on my foot, expecting to see a wasp or yellow jacket I was surprized to see a fly. Well I shook my foot and swat at it, but it didn't move! It kept stinging me! It itched and hurt really bad. An hour later after standing up I felt needle like sinsations rising up my leg. Everytime I arose from my desk I felt the sinsations all afternoon. It was much better by 4:30, 2 1/2 hrs. after I was stung. I put alcohol and calimine lotion on it. What type of fly was that?

I don't know of any flies that "sting" per se but there are several flies that bite (to suck blood) and their bite is painful and their saliva stings like crazy. Some people have allergic reactions to the saliva making it even more painful and long lasting.

The most common biting flies are generally refered to as horse flies and deer flies and some types of these are not necessarily bigger than a common house fly and they look very similar.

yeah i was stung/bit by a fly too, it didnt move when i fanned it away .it was twice a big as a normal house fly with a rusty color face. i think it was actually sucking blood. i bled a little (a drop about the size of a pinhead) when i brushed it off but i didnt feel any effects. if it caused all of that, i would go to the doctor. it could have been a small horsefly.

A fly cant sting it uses its proboscis to penetrate what it wants to eat but blood isnt one of its food sources, I may be a little off on that one, more or less it was something else cause with the many thousands of insects around who knows which one it could've been.

It's a horse fly. And they don't sting, they actually bite a chunk of skin out of you.
Now you know why horses are always swatting their tails.

There's also what's known as a bot fly. They do sting, sort of. Actually what they do stick their little thing in, to lay their eggs. They lay their eggs in the feet of cattle mostly.
