SMR: The energy you expend into turning the peddles drives an electric generator. The electrical load, is varied electronically, by adding more parallell resistances, which draw more power from the generator. The heavier the load on the generator, the harder it is to turn the generator. They say that it is silent, because older technology changed the tension on a belt, which made it harder to turn the wheel. That produced some noise, and wasnt very smooth. The electronic version, is smooth, and can very the load in small incriments, making for a better experience.
