Im vegetarian so cans of dog food freak me out. I was borrowing a friends dog so I bought her a couple chicken thighs and she ate them whole bones and all. Now my GF tells me that chicken bones are like tiny trees and they will snag on her digestive track and rip her open!

OMG! What should I do? Should I call 911 for pets? What is that #? Will 911 know the #?

Dr. Mike, DVM, who writes an on line pet health advisory (or did until he retired) stated that he has never seen a problem in the digestive tract of a dog after it ate chicken bones. He stated that, as it has been known to happen, it isn't at all common. The biggest problem he had ever seen, was of it getting stuck in the throat, or jammed in the teeth, or across the roof of the mouth...So, just keep an eye on her, and watch for any problem with having a bowel stool over the next day or two..Once it is past the throat, the dog should be OK..

Here is an exceerpt from one of his pages on feeding bones> "Most of the problems we see with bones are not major life and death problems, like obstructions. We see several dogs every year with bones lodged across the roof of their mouth leading to pain and infection and we see a number of dogs with severe constipation problems related to ingestion of bones. I have heard of deaths from esophageal puncture and intestinal obstruction associated with bones but I can't remember personally seeing such a case.

I think it is better to error on the side of caution with bones in most cases. I recommend against feeding them for that reason. Lots of people get away with feeding their dogs bones of all types, so most of the time this isn't going to cause problems"

Did you see if the dog was knawing on the bone? If he swallowed the bone whole, it may cause him discomfort while pooing. Was he chewing the bone and eating bits of it? Either way, he should be fine. You can go see a vet if you feel it's necessary or if the dog seems ill or seem to be in pain. The chicken thigh bones will not snag his digestive track because it's pretty smooth and one big piece, if you have the ribs then you should visit a vet.

I would call the vet, especially is she acts a little sick. I lost a dog to chicken bones, someone put some in the trash and I didn't know it until it was too last. I would never give bones to dogs or cats. My dog did not make it. Dog food is a well balanced diet for dogs. Feed her the kind she is used to so as not to upset her digestive tract. Good luck.

bring the dog to an emergency hospital now. my friends dog died from that. Do not ever let your dog eat bones. The smaller the dog the more dangerous don't wait. Take the dog now and don't listen to these people do not give it peroxide or anything else to make it vomit the bones could cause more trouble coming up, look in your yellow pages or call information and get the name of an animal hospital in your area. good luck.

first of all, way to go.

If the dog is not used to table food, its probably going to throw up anyway.

Chicken bones are NOT very good for dogs, nor would I feed RAW meat to a dog - salmonella and e-coli and all...

The dog will probably be just fine, but keep an eye on it - and take it to a vet if it starts acting wierd. Be sure to tell the vet what happened, and be sure to tell your friend so they can keep an eye on the dog when you give it back.

First, stay calm buddy.
Second, dogs don't eat the WHOLE bone, the smashed until it's safe for them to avoid chocking. So if the dog looks fine is because she put the bones into very little pieces of meat and nothing will happen to it. So don't worry. By the way your GF knows nothing about dogs...

Since it was raw there's no problem. Don't even worry about it. My folks feed their dogs raw chicken all the time (on the bone). Their dogs are Chihuahuas and so only eat the wings but still no problem.

If you buy meat for a dog that has bones in it, don't cook it. The cooking is what makes the bone splinter.

I feed a raw meat diet to my cats.

Just call a vet if you're concerned. It could pass out just fine. I thought the greatest danger from the bones was swallowing and the throat.
