I am 23 and live a relatively healthy lifestyle. I just found out that I have high cholesterol. Anyone know of any ways to lower it without medicine?

Cholesterol can be hereditary, so you may need mediation.

For starters, watch SALTS of any kind.

Limit red meat.

Broil or poach all your meats.

No more fried foods, including chicken, french fries.

Start eating some peanut butter.

Start using Olive oil.

Your salad dressing should be a little olive oil and some apple cider vinegar.

Eat apples, at least two or three a day if you can

Stop using maargerine, if you must have it go back to butter and use very little of it!

Olive oil should be your only oil. Get rid of everything else.

No other types of salad dressings.

Bring your meat content down, especially red meats.

Have tuna like once a week, tuna in water, white albacore, maybe in a salad with Olive Oil and Vingar dressing.

You can use a little black pepper on it

Go to 2% milk. or 1% milk.

Start introducing lots of green vegies, broccoili, spinach, burssle sprouts, aspargus

Try ad make these with no salt and only a tad of butter at most.

Steam them until jsut barely soft.

Watch fast foods, especailly pizza and thigs like taht.

No more pork sausage or bacon.

Limite eggs. No more than two a week hard boiled or poached or cooked in a teflon pan with no grease.

If this doesn't work, then it's heridtary and you need the medication.

Healthy lifestyles doesn't mean you've gotten rid of TRANS FATS

Breakfast:

Oatmeal with a tad of honey or butter or a little 1% milk with some rains maybe. A dobble portion if you want.

A whole grapefruit no sugar, just as is.

Slice of Oat Bran bread with peanut butter.

10 AM snack an apple.

Lunch

A french lunch

Some celery with peanut bettur in one or two of them.

Wine

Good cheese

Some oat or oat bran bread

Another apple.

Dinner

Broiled or poached SKINLESS WASHED IN WATER chicken breast, broccoli or asparugus

A salad with Olive Oil and Apple Cider Vinegar dressing

Desert and apple.

Drink at least 36 ounces of pure water a day. Filtered water if you can get it.

Not only SHOULD this fight cholesterol it should keep your weight down.

If it don't take the pills.

Natural, european-style bread is a way to lower your cholesterol.

Do not eat American bread! That soft mushy stuff called Wonderbread and all the rest of them. They are very unhealthy.

Buy your bread from a bakery fresh every couple of days. You can freeze it to make it last longer and then just put it in the microwave for 30 sec. thaw it out.

Also, you probably think eating salads is healthy. It is, but most Americans do even that wrong. Don't use any traditional American salad dressings that come in bottles etc.

Make your own dressing the way Europeans do it.

Just use OLIVE OIL (olive oil reduces bad cholesterol) and balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. That's all you need for a good salad.

Also, dramatically reduce your consumption of fried foods. We Americans eat way too much fried stuff.

Overall, I would suggest you try to eat like southern Europeans.

Their diet has shown them to have much lower rates of heart disease, cancer and other life-style related illnesses.

What is high?
Is that the LDL? HDL? Total CHL? Triglycerides?

Divide your triglycerides by the HDL. If that is below 3 then don't panic. It is all ok.

Don't believe other ratio too much.

I had choleterol myself and I resolved the issue without pills. The best diet you can do is very simple:

- CUT CARBS ! Big time! I stopped bread, pasta, rice, potatos. I eat meat, fish, dairy, eggs. The results are there !!! It works!

Essential to this:
- regular exercise...I mean regular. Every 2 days.
- eat good fats: olive oil, nut based oils
- take vitamin E
- take cold liver oil.

Lots of fruit and veggies, lean protein such as white meat chicken and fish baked or broiled not fried, oatmeal, whole grain breads and cut back or eliminate all prosessed sugars. Drink plenty of water, cut back or eliminate alcohol consumption and if you are overweight, try to lose the extra weight. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day three times a week and if you smoke anything, stop. If you are already doing this then you probably do need medication.

Same here...I am relatively young as well and I control mine (quite well) without medications.

I take cod liver oil daily, eat more fish (salmon), less red meat, and eat more fiber (oatmeal daily, cheerios, etc.). Just those changes alone dropped my total cholesterol by about 60 points.

Good Luck :-)

Watch your fat intake. Some people just have high cholesterol as their body makes it naturally. You may need meds to control it if the dr. says.

A healthy lifestyle is a good start, but you need to pay particular attention to your diet. Avoid the bad fats, less red meat, and exercise regularly. I managed to lower mine by 95 points by just a few diet modifications...Granted, I haven't enjoyed but 2 steaks all year...lol...but it is possible. Consult a dietitian for a better structured plan and good luck!
