There is a whole lot of construction going on right now at the National Zoo and a lot of the animals have been loaned out to other zoos. The new zoo director says in another 2 years that the National Zoo will be the top zoo in the nation.

The pandas are cute but a 2 hour drive to see them? Personally, I do not think so. The zoo is free. Parking costs about $12 for all day.

If you were going to include the Natiional Zoo with other activities such as the Air & Space Museum near Dulles Airport (it is fantastic), and a couple of museums downtown DC, and plan to spend at least 5 days doing all of this, include the Zoo in your plans by all means. For a stand-alone reason for coming to DC, the Zoo is not worth it at this time.

Yes, the 3 pandas, including the baby one, are the main attraction. There's no zoo within driving distance that has pandas!

And the zoo is free. Most of the other zoos cost around $10 for admission.

Definitely yes! Viewing the pandas is worth the cost of gas alone. We've even made the trip from Toledo, Oh (10 hours)

The zoo rocks...then again, everytime I've gone, it starts raining...even if it's supposed to be a clear and sunny or cloudy day with no rain.

yes...it's a fantastic zoo, and it's free
If you're bringing the family, the cost savings alone make up for the time and gas.

It will only be worth it, if you visit other places while you are in DC.
