I am also in Michigan
you can prove it to her by calling your local police dept or cps

there is no legal age when children can be left home alone the only requirement is that the are capable of handling an emergency situation (know how to call 911 or get out of the house in case of fire)

I legally watched my two brothers when I was 8 (they were 7 and 3) my father and his mother reported my mom to cps but were informed that there was nothing they could (or would do)

as to the answer below, as I stated cps were informed and upon investigation found I was competent to handle any emergency situation and legally capable of caring for my siblings. there were no grounds for neglect and no charges could be pressed. I cared for my brothers while my mother taught her head start class in the morning (including getting them out of bed and the three of us off to school) and during the evening after school when my mother worked as a cook, I did not provide overnight care till I was 11.

To me, that is a common sense question. If you leave a child alone and they cannot handle a situation, then you are in trouble.

I would not leave a young child alone at home at night before the age 16, at least. Even then, I would like to have someone in the house with the child. Another responsible friend or a relative or someone.

Young children, in my opinion should not have to be responsible for younger siblings at a early age. Not before 13 or so and never to care or look after babies.

My daughter was 16 when I started working part time and that was in the evening between 6p and 12a. I also had another daughter who was two years younger and they were both responsible girls. I ran a tight ship. They would watch their younger brothers ages 11 and 6. Staying in the house was the golden rule when I was away at work.

There was no cooking involved because I would have dinner ready before I left for work. I only worked 3 days a week. It worked out very well for us.

Hey! I'm a foster care social worker so I'm pretty sure I know the rules. (I'm from Michigan)

It depends on duration....overnight, it is 17.

Assuming it is not overnight....

There isn't really a law, but it is recommended that child can stay alone at 12, but cannot supervise other children. It is 14 to supervise.

Of course, legal doesn't make it right....you need to be sure your 12 year old is mature enough...14 for that matter too!

Anything younger than that is grounds for neglect...doesn't mean PS would do anything, but they could........ the response previous to me I'd like to know when that was because with an 8 year old supervising two younger children, the children should have been removed and the parent charged with neglect. There was grounds.

According to the National Child Care Information Network
(http://nccic.org/) "States do not have regulations or laws about when a child is considered old enough to care for him/herself or to care for other children. States may have guidelines or recommendations. These guidelines are most often distributed through child protective services and are administered at the county level."

Wouldn't it be easy enough for you to call up your local police station (on the business line) and ask them?
