ok me and my cousin are curious to know which procedure is the best way to go in terms of pain: getting your wisdom teeth pulled out or getting put to sleep and letting them cut them out? also what are the pros and cons for either procedure?

First of all you don't make the decision as to whether a wisdom tooth is "pulled" out or "cut" out. The oral surgeon who is doing the procedure is the one who makes that decision. I have worked in the dental field for 20 years, mostly as an oral surgery assistent so I know what I speak of. First you need to find yourself a highly skilled or highly recommended by a trusted dentist Oral Surgeon. Then go to the Oral Surgeon for a consultation. They will most likely take a Panoramic X-Ray which shows all your teeth and both your top and lower jaw. From this and an examination the Dr. will determine why, how and if your wisdom teeth should come out. If you are a very anxious patient then having a general anesthetic or what they call "twilight sleep" would be the way to go if your particular Oral Surgeon offers these options. If your extractions seem to be rather cut and dry, simple extractions, then using only a local may be enough although you will hear some odd sounds and feel the injections to numb you and pressure when the teeth are extracted. From my experience most lower wisdom teeth are usually at least partial boney impaction or full boney impactions. These types of extractions require the Dr. to make an incision in order to make a flap so he/she can see the roots of the tooth, then drill the tooth into several pieces and then remove the tooth fragments, and then pull the flap back up and suture it. I've seen upper wisdom teeth that kind of just "pop" out and I've seen some that need the procedure I've just explained. There really are no Pro's or Con's when it comes to getting your wisdom teeth out. Each patient is unique and requires their own "best way of doing the job" as decided by the Oral Surgeonand yourself after you have been told the situation and what the options for your personal case are. It's really just the luck of the draw when it comes to wisdom teeth. You've got what you've got and that's what the Dr. needs to work with. Be sure to ask all questions you feel you need to ask and follow all pre and post operative instructions to the letter. If you do these things then regardless of what procedure you need to have you will most likely come out of it just fine. Good Luck!

I had my wisdom teeth taken out at the beginning of the month. I was given valium, some shots to numb the gums, and a little bit of gas. I didn't feel a thing and wasn't even a sleep. After I had my wisdom teeth taken out I was given so me penicillin and some pain killers. I had a little bit of swelling that hurt but it wasn't anything the pain killers couldn't take care of. If the dentist does a great job then you won't feel a thing.

I would talk to a dentist if I were you. Different dentists may have different thoughts.

I have only had my top 2 wisdom teeth pulled out (I haven't had any cut out). It didn't hurt because they put your mouth to sleep but after the medication wore off it hurt pretty bad for days. But the pain meds my dentist perscribe were pretty awesome. I still have impacted wisdom teeth on the bottom, but they don't bother me and I'll probably just leave them alone.

When the top of my mouth healed after having the wisdom teeth pulled though I felt tremendously better. Because I had been getting infections in my gums because of them.

They generally pull them when the teeth are not impacted. The cutting comes when they are impacted. And don't let anybody tell you any different, both procedures hurt after. Usually the impacted hurt worse, for they were buried.

I word as a dental assistant for 2 years right after high school.

Your wisdom teeth will mostly likely be pulled unless they are embedded or impacted.....

It's not your choice. It's up to the oral surgeon.
