My dog will not stop drinking water. This has never been tried, I am not cruel to my dog, but to give you an idea of the severity, if provided an unlimited supply of water, she would drink until she vomits, then would begin drinking again. To give some background, she is a 45 - 50 lb. Boxer that was rescued from Arizona (I live in Ohio.) There is a really good chance she was abused by the previous owner. The vet said she is fine, no diseases or anything. My thinking is that it is psychological, I'm assuming that she was not given water often combined with Arizona's climate made her dehydrated and craving water. I believe she thinks when given water she must get all she can because there may not be a next time, but that is JMO.
I limit her water intake to avoid this, I put down the toilet seats to avoid her drinking them ( she has drank the entire bowl dry before) and now she drinks sprinklers.
Is there any way to get her over this problem, or do you think I am even right?

seems like you're pretty much on point with your thoughts. especially if the vet says shes fine. so just limit her water intake like uve been doing.

Maybe like you said before, she is really dehydrated and is filling up on water. It is sometimes common for dogs to drink out of the toilet, some dogs do it and some don't. Try asking the vet what she thinks about it. If she says it's ok then do what you normally do, give her a certain amount of water so she doesn't "over drink". If she says it is not normal than she what she has in mind. Hope I helped!

Tell your vet. She might have something that causes her to dehydrate easily or something. It could be psychological, though. If it is, I'd suggest just giving her small amounts of water 5-6 times a day. Praise her if she stops drinking before the bowl is empty. She might eventually get the idea that enough is enough.

Please don't laugh~ Pet psychic

I actually used one when my 7month old puppy Hanna was crying in pain and die-ing at a Vet's office. She identified the problem, while I was on the phone at 6am and I was talking to the VET at the same time. He said he didn't even think of that. He took to x-ray right then and the psychic "nailed it" exactly and then four days of intensive care. Still today. I know she saved my dog.

She actually told me that my dog would live a very long life, yet she would not be a normal dog. and I should dedicate space for her. My dog is 14 now. She is an only dog, still today.

Best wishes

your dog could be diabetic. this will make her thirsty constantly. does she void the same amount of water that she is taking in? if not her water intake could be a larger problem and would ask vet to do blood work. work with vet and observe your dog; take it from there. she might just be a dog that likes water, my benjamin tries to catch the water coming out of the the tub. snount under and all...he is a silly boy ~ sherry

yes i got a dog that was starved and given no water and she was the same way and she had to be limited every time she was fed and given water. you are absolutely doing the right thing. she did eventually get over this but she still has "food issues" she will sometimes hover over the food bowl and not let the other dogs near it to eat and i have to shoo her away. and i always seperate the dogs when they are given a special treat. good luck to you and kudos for rescuing that dog and being so patient.

I believe it is simply fun and psychological for the dog to drink. I used to have a lab that drank profusely like for no reason. Simply loved to drink..all the time! Sprinklers, toilets, rivers, bowl, etc. He died at 8 human years. Nothing was ever wrong with that dog.

Are you sure your vet did a thorough exam? Dogs can get diabetes just like humans, and excessive thirst is a symptom. Go back to your vet (or another vet) and ask for a blood test that measures blood glucose. Good luck - hope your pooch isn't sick!

Make sure the vet has checked her for SIADH, which can be caused by a tumor of the pituitary gland.

ADH is the thirst hormone. If there is too much ADH present the dog (or human) has uncontrollable thirst and can literally drink too much water and die of "water intoxication", because the blood chemistry becomes too diluted.

she should be fine. just put water down like 6 - 7 times daily and only allow her to drink for like 2 minutes at a time. That could be why she does it so yea control how much water she gets
