Actually the doctor is right because my daughter didn't stop sucking her thumb until she turned seven years old, i even tried to stop my daughter when she was a baby. I tried hot sauce, other things that were not very tasteful, and it didn't work. So basically she is going to have to grow out of it on her own. my daughter is now 12 years old and she is thumb free so let her do it on her own when she is ready to stop sucking on her thumb.

I sucked my thumb until I was 6! Nothing my mom tried worked -- though these are some of the things she did do...
1. Dipped my thumb in something that tasted horrible -- can't remember.
2. Wrapped my thumbs in bandaids so it wouldn't feel right in my mouth.
3. Painted my nails and told me they would only stay pretty if I didn't suck my thumb b/c that would make them chip (granted you have a 12mo)

she is only 1 years old don't worry until she is at least 2 1/2 .dose she suck on a pacifier is she still on a bottle at that age it is a comfort zone and she still has teeth coming in she may be rubbing her gums when she is ready and feels secure she will stop if she is still doing it at like 5 or 6 then worry don't forget she probably just started to learn how to walk a few months ago things are still new and scary

in the beginning you will possibly desire to have stopped this situation an prolonged time a go; inspite of the undeniable fact that i recognize that putting warm sause, pepper or something nasty on their thumb while they do no longer look to be looking works with toddlers. After according to threat 3 or 4 circumstances of tasting something nasty on their thumb, they are going to start to associate the nasty style with the sucking the thumb. i'm uncertain if it is going to artwork with a 12 12 months previous, yet you will possibly desire to tell her that if she retains sucking her thumb her front tooth will stick out!

Give her something else to suck on. Children do it to soothe themselves until they mature enough to develop other methods of dealing with difficult feelings.

Nursing to age 2 or beyond is the easiest way to prevent thumbsucking, pacifier addiction, and also to prevent any need/desire for orthodontic work later in life, which is not only obscenely expensive and time-consuming for you, but a long, painful ordeal to the child, physically and emotionally. I'm sure some kids go through it with no problem, but my children were traumatized beyond what you could imagine, by the process, before we adopted them.

You don't have to produce milk to nurse a child. You only have to decide that you want to provide for your child's emotional and oral development needs in the way you both were biologically designed to go about it. If you're so inclined, look into Medela or Lact-Aid kits.

Because my children nursed, they never sucked their thumbs or used pacifiers. Children have a biological need to suck. If yours isn't nursing, or is supplementing let's say!, she needs to comfort herself. Does she sleep alone in a crib? Our children always slept in our bed, too, so they didn't have the need to comfort themselves. It's very stressful to be away from mommy = it's biological programming that makes it so stressful. So, babies have to comfort themselves. Your doctor knows you will do much more harm than good trying to 'speed her up alitlte.' I think a lot of people, especially those that use day care, want their babies to appear older so they can feel less guilty about the hard life their babies have. I think alot of people want their toddlers and preschoolers to appear older so they don't have to parent them much. Then, these people try to impose on all of society that notion that securely attached, well-cared for children are somehow defective, having a defective experience.

12 month olds are reallly young. we need to let them be babies.

I don't want to discourage you at all but some children take a lot longer to break than others. I would attemp to get her on a pacifier and then gradually break her from that, you can take a pacifier but you cant take her thumb. They also make a finernail polish that you paint on your childs fingers that tastes really bad and doesnt go away untill you take the polish off. You should be able to get it at a pharmacy.

She's one years old. Let her enjoy her thumb. She will stop soon but if you make a big deal about it she may actually suck her thumb longer. I would worry if she is still sucking her thumb in first grade.

they used to make some NASTY tasting stuff you can paint her thumb with - she'll put her thumb in her mouth and SPIT it out very quickly.
See if you can find an alternate way for her to comfort herself...it starts as a comfort mechanism and ends up a habit...that leads to crooked teeth.

put some tobasco sauce on it! or something that tastes really jucky! There is this stuff that you put on your nails, that tastes really gross so you won't bite youre nails... it has the same effect for thumbsucking!
