Popping your back is similar to popping any other joint in your body. Basically, you are pushing out the air that accumulates in the spaces between your joints. It generally has made me feel better, although to my knowledge there is no evidence that it really decreases pain. But, as far as I know, it also doesn't really hurt you. Still, I wouldn't mess with my spine!

Personally, I wouldn't go to a chiropracter. If you have real back pain, you should get checked out by an M.D. to make sure there isn't anything serious going on. If your doctor determines that you have a purely musculoskeletal problem, then maybe a chiropracter can help you with his manipulations, or a physical therapist can suggest excercises/stretches.

Popping your own back could be making it worse. Go to a chiropractor.

I agree, see a chiropractor. I am one, and all you are doing is making it move more, which the body is going to try and tighten up even more to support it, that is the body's natural response.
