Although I don't know the exact answer, I can tell you that territheterr's answer is WAY off the mark. My son-in-law became a police officer about 11 years ago, and has become a member of their SWAT team, and then Captain of their SWAT team and a Sergeant over sting operations in drug and prostitution crimes, and he didn't have the money that territheterr says you need. And he's doing quite well now financially too. Not rich, but definitely not poor. He really put himself into the job, and it became more of a career than just a job. I think DrVodka has a correct answer in that some police academies will train you for free, or will allow you to pay for your training out of your salary. But, as needy as many police forces are, I bet there's a way to have them pay for your training, if you prove successful and stay with them a while. I can only say, if you're thinking of a career in law enforcement, GO FOR IT!!!! We need qualified individuals who want to do the job, EVERYWHERE in the U.S.. I'm very proud of my son-in-law, and I'd be proud of you too, even though I don't know you. God Bless you.

Well while it only requires a high school education, in real life to actually get hired, you will need a college degree or 4 years of military service ( both are better)
But in the departments I have worked for, to get started you don't pay any money out of your pocket, the department supplies you everyhting that is required.

My brother went to a community college for two years got his bachelors in Criminal Justice. That's all it cost him.
Most places will train you at no cost, after your initial college qualifiers.
I would look into police academies. State jobs work the same i believe.
My brother owes nothing for becoming an officer.

It would take an immeasureable amount of money for ME to become a police officer.... my soul is not for sale... and the behavior I've seen by police would require selling ones soul.
