D.C. or the District.

I use "Washington" when referring to Washington state.

I'm in Maryland...everyone round here calls it D.C. because if you say Washington, everyone thinks you mean the state on the west coast.

When Marion Barry was mayor, they actually had signs at the borders saying. "Welcome to Washington, D.C. - The Chocolate City"

I heard that Mayor Nagin of New Orleans has taken that slogan now.

people around DC call it DC.... uh kinda like i just did there. haha. its the people far out that call it Washington. And like the first response said, people inside just name their neighborhood.

Either. But if they actually live in DC, they will probably tell you which neighborhood they live in.
