take the Air train to Jamaica Station -end of the line
Take the LIRR west to Woodside - make sure that the train stops at Woodside ,there are some express that go straight to Penn station. The announcement will sound something like" New York train on track 2 stopping at Woodside and Penn station"
When you get off at Woodside go upstairs and catch the # 7 train to Grand Central-this time use the express
Cost around $12.00
When you get off the Air Train get your LIRR AND your metro card [ which gets you on the subway] at ticket office

The subway doesn't stop at JFK. HOWEVER..... You can get the AirTrain at JFK, and take it to Jamaica. From Jamaica, you get a Manhattan-bound E train. At Lexington Ave/53rd Street, transfer to a downtown 6 train (it's a bit of a walk, but there are escalators). The next stop on the 6 is Grand Central Terminal/42nd Street. Alternatively, if there's some kind of service change that slows things down, you can take that E train to Roosevelt Avenue, then get a Manhattan-bound 7 (it's a long way up, but there are escalators/elevators). On the 7, get off at Grand Central Terminal. If only the Long Island Rail Road went to Grand Central. Not yet, but they're working on it. That'll be convenient.

Take the AirTrain from any terminal. You pay for the
ride after you get off the train.
Make sure you get on an AirTrain that is leaving the airport; some of the trains just circle the terminal. You need to get on a train that goes to Jamaica Station.
When you get to Jamiaca Station, you can buy a Metrocard at one of the machines before the exit turnstiles.
Take the E train to 42nd St -- then take the S (shuttle to Grand Central).
.
Cost: $7 total: $5 for the AirTrain; $2.00 for the subway.
